I just need to type this out. I've been noticing something with my dad. It's subtle, but it's there. He works at the factory, assembling... I don't even know what exactly, some kind of electronic components, I think. Very precise stuff. And lately, when he's home, sometimes he squints at things, almost imperceptibly. Like he's trying to bring them into focus. I've seen him hold his phone further away, then closer. Not like a normal old-man thing, because he already has reading glasses. This is different.
He gets really quiet after work sometimes. More than usual. And when I ask him how his day was, he just says "fine" in a way that means don't ask anymore. I started paying attention to his hands. When he's just sitting, his fingers sometimes twitch, like they're still doing something repetitive. And there are these little tremors sometimes, when he's trying to pour coffee or something. I remember seeing him drop a wrench in the garage a few weeks ago. He just picked it up really fast, like no big deal. But I saw it. I feel like I'm compiling data points. Like this is a case study unfolding in our living room.
The thought of him... messing up at work, that's what gets me. It's a factory, not some cushy office job. There are machines. Moving parts. If his vision is blurring, if he's not seeing things clearly, that could be really bad. Not just for him, but for other people. I can't imagine what would happen if he caused some kind of accident. The idea just sits in my stomach. It's like this slow dread. I haven't said anything to him. What would I even say? "Hey Dad, I've noticed your vision is deteriorating and you're probably a danger to yourself and others at your job"? I can't. He'd just brush it off. And then what? It's easier to just observe. But the observation itself is becoming a problem.
