You know that 2am silence in the suburbs? It isn't actually silent. It’s a low-frequency hum of central air units and refrigerators. It’s a very specific decibel level. I’m sitting on the floor of my home office—the one with the eggshell-white walls that the HOA approved—and I’m looking at a piece of cardstock. It’s a postcard. I spent years as a librarian, which is a profession that requires a high degree of organizational efficacy, but I retired early last year. It was a tactical withdrawal from public life. Now I organize my own files. I organize them every day, every single day.
The postcard is from 2014.
